Why did the agent discard a candidate?
How to understand why a candidate turned out not to be a fit (Evaluation tab, filters, criteria, answers) and how to step in.
Updated on Oct 12, 2026
The agent discards a candidate when they don't meet a filter or when their score is below the Minimum passing score. The Evaluation tab tells you which of the two.
Where to find it: Inbox → open the candidate's chat → Evaluation tab. From the campaign: Candidates tab → View conversation.
Steps: what to check
- Open the candidate's chat and go to the Evaluation tab. It's available once the conversation has ended.
- Read the outcome and the summary with the main reasons.
- Compare the score with the minimum score.
- If the score is above the threshold, the reason is almost always a filter that wasn't met.
- Look at the criteria and questions used.
- Reread the chat in the History tab. Check that the answers were understood correctly.
- Check the setup: the job role's Evaluation, or Criteria in the campaign if they were changed there.
For details on each item, see How to read the candidate's evaluation.
The most common causes
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Score above threshold but not a fit | A filter that wasn't met | Check the active filters and the linked question |
| Score below threshold | Unbalanced weights or a high threshold | Review Weight (importance) and Minimum passing score |
| Candidate's answer misread | Ambiguous question | Rewrite the question more clearly |
| Questions different from the job role's | Campaign edited manually or job role not applied | Check the campaign's Settings → Conversation |
How to step in
- For this candidate: if the outcome is wrong, change the candidate's status from the status menu. See Candidate statuses: what they mean and how to correct them. During the conversation you can also use Quick actions → Stop assessment and assign the result yourself.
- For future candidates: fix filters, criteria or questions in the job role and apply the changes to the campaigns. Or fix only the campaign.
- Verify: try the new setup with Test the conversation from the campaign's … menu.
- Report: if the agent misunderstood a clear answer, leave feedback. See How to leave feedback on an agent conversation.
Good to know
- One unmet filter is enough to make the candidate not a fit, even with great scores. Besides the chat, the evaluation uses only a few details from the CV, like the date of birth.
- Every filter must have a linked question.
- Changes to criteria, filters, questions, FAQs, rules and empathy only apply to new conversations: they don't change outcomes already given.
- If you manually mark the candidate as not a fit (Not a fit - manual), the Manual rejection template is sent.
Common issues
The agent discarded a candidate who met the requirements. Check the answer to the question linked to the filter. Often the question can be read in two ways.
All candidates come out as not a fit. Check the minimum score and the filters. A filter that's too strict discards almost everyone.
The agent skipped a question and then discarded the candidate. The agent skips a question only if it's sure of the answer. Look for it earlier in the chat.
