How to write a job role's screening questions
Create the agent's questions with conditional questions and variables, and write clear questions that filter well.
Updated on Oct 12, 2026
The questions are the path the agent follows on WhatsApp with every candidate for the job role.
Where to find it: Recruiting → Job roles → open the job role → Questions block → Edit. For a single campaign: campaign → Settings tab → Conversation block → Questions → Edit.
Steps
- Open the job role and click Edit in the Questions block.
- Choose and customize the Filter questions, that is, the ones for all candidates. For a new question, use Add question.
- For an alternative path, click Add conditional question and set which question follows based on the answer.
- Insert variables where needed: $ROLE, $LOCATION, $COMPANY.
- Put the questions in the right order.
- Save and test the path from the campaign with Test the conversation. See How to test a campaign before launch.

Question types
- Standard: asked to everyone. E.g. Are you available to work shifts?
- Conditional: depends on the previous answer. E.g. if they answer "No" about shifts, ask Which days are you available?
- With variables: the text adapts to the campaign.
- $ROLE → name of the position. Do you have experience as $ROLE?
- $LOCATION → the campaign's location. Can you get to our $LOCATION location?
- $COMPANY → company name shown to the candidate.
Variables take their values from the campaign (e.g. Job position, Company name, locations).
How to write effective questions
- Ask 3–6 questions. For operational roles (food service, retail, logistics), 3–4 are enough.
- Beyond 8 questions, many candidates drop out.
- Start with general questions (availability), then move to specific ones.
- Ask about objective facts, with a clear expected answer.
| Goal | Write this | Avoid | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Availability | Are you available to work weekends? | Are you flexible with your hours? | Flexibility is subjective. |
| Requirements | Do you have a category B driving license? | Do you have a car? | Having a car doesn't tell you which license they hold. |
| Logistics | Can you get to our $LOCATION location? | Do you live near us? | The candidate doesn't know where the location is. |
Sensitive questions
- Age: ask Are you 18 or older?, not How old are you?.
- Nationality or residence permit: check with your legal team first.
- Health: don't ask about health in pre-screening.
Examples by industry
- Food service: availability on weekends and holidays; experience in kitchen, dining room or bar (how many years); split shifts; getting to the location.
- Retail: weekend availability; sales experience; part-time or full-time.
- Logistics: C license, CPC or forklift license (which one); night shifts; years in a warehouse.
Good to know
- Non-negotiable requirements go in Filters. Nice-to-have ones go in Evaluation criteria. Every filter must have a linked question.
- The agent's Empathy Level changes how questions are phrased. With None, the agent asks them exactly as you wrote them.
- The agent skips a question only if it's sure the candidate has already answered, for example earlier in the chat.
- If the candidate is in several campaigns, the agent remembers their answers for 60 days. See How a candidate in several campaigns works.
- Changes to the job role's questions don't carry over on their own to campaigns that already exist. See How to edit, duplicate or archive a job role.
Common issues
The agent skipped a question. This only happens if the agent is sure the candidate has already answered. Read the chat in Inbox: usually the information was given earlier.
A conditional question doesn't trigger. Check which answer it's tied to. Test all the variants with Test the conversation.
Too many candidates drop out halfway. Reduce the number of questions and remove open-ended ones.
